The objective of this study was to assess the serum levels of doxycycline in patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis and to identify predictors of treatment response. A total of 120 patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis were randomized to either receive doxycycline 100 mg twice daily or doxycycline 100 mg twice daily. In the doxycycline 100 mg group, mean serum doxycycline levels were significantly higher at the beginning of treatment (mean [SD] 0.21 [1.02]) and increased at 4 weeks (mean [SD] 0.31 [0.83]) compared to baseline. However, serum doxycycline levels were not significantly different in the doxycycline 100 mg group compared to baseline (mean [SD] 0.14 [0.12]) at 4 weeks.
The serum levels of doxycycline were also significantly higher at baseline in the doxycycline 100 mg group compared to baseline in the doxycycline 100 mg group (mean [SD] 1.06 [0.85]).
In conclusion, doxycycline 100 mg twice daily was associated with a significantly higher serum level of doxycycline compared to doxycycline 100 mg twice daily in patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis. Patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis who had an infection with doxycycline 100 mg twice daily were more likely to respond to treatment.
The results of this study demonstrated that patients who were treated with doxycycline 100 mg twice daily for 4 weeks had a significantly lower serum level of doxycycline compared to those who received doxycycline 100 mg twice daily. Furthermore, these results were also associated with the presence of chronic bacterial prostatitis, suggesting that patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis may respond well to treatment with doxycycline.
